Whitburn Surgery/South Tyneside Health Collaboration: Salaried GP

An opportunity has arisen due to retirement for a forward-thinking and enthusiastic salaried GP to join and eventually lead our friendly team at Whitburn Surgery. The practice is to be run by South Tyneside Health Collaboration – a federation of South Tyneside GP practices – which already runs another practice in the borough. Currently Whitburn Surgery is a GMS practice with a list size of 5140 with 2 GPs (of which the successful candidate will replace one), a part time long-term GP locum, 1 nurse practitioner, 1 practice nurse, 1 healthcare assistant with support from PCN staff including pharmacists, MSK & mental health practitioners, social prescribers, podiatrists and cancer care coordinators. The successful candidate will not only become part of this practice but will link with other STHC GPs in a mutual support scheme. We are looking for someone to join us for 9 sessions per week (8 clinical and 1 admin/education) but could be flexible for the right candidate.

Why come and work with us?

  • Purpose built surgery premises in a beautiful coastal village location

  • Good work life balance and smarter working practices, protecting you from as much clinical admin work as possible; we have specially trained administrators for letters, reports & results to minimise the burden on our clinicians. The practice was one of those that helped pilot the “GPs don’t need to deal with results” scheme.

  • Emphasis on team working. Planned break within morning surgery to allow staff to meet, debrief, offer peer support and chat

  • Member Practice of South Tyneside Health Collaboration

  • Support for the new GP from senior GPs in the practice and from STHC

  • Member practice of PCN South

  • Flexible sessions with time to provide good quality care

  • Clinical pharmacist support available

  • Monthly practice meetings and educational events

  • Part of South Tyneside CCG and monthly “Time out” educational events

  • All staff are encouraged to pursue their areas of specialist clinical interest, such as minor surgery clinics, joint injection clinics, contraceptive implant fitting, care home ward rounds. There is plenty of scope for staff to develop their skills. Because of the nature of STHC, it would be possible to provide these services for more than just the Whitburn surgery if that would be of interest

  • Excellent QOF results year on year

  • Excellent Patient Satisfaction Survey results year on year

  • CQC 'Good' rating

  • On call duties shared on a pro-rata basis

  • Low home visiting rate and local acute care team available for patient support

  • Safe and supportive working environment

  • 6 weeks holiday, 1 week self-managed study leave and protected CPD time. The successful applicant can apply to receive a one off Golden Hello payment of up to £10,000 pro rata to full time (8 clinical sessions and 1 CPD) to take up a substantive post in South Tyneside

  • Enhanced salary- to be discussed

If this sounds like the practice for you then we would love to meet you. If you would like more information or would like to arrange an informal visit, then please contact Suzanne Roberts:

For clarity, I thought it would be useful to add some greater context to the position of GPCE exec around the Network Contract DES (PCN DES). We entered negotiations with NHSE in January 2022 with the
